I Am the Bread of Life

This song comes directly from John 6:35, where Jesus says:
“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

In that chapter, the crowd wanted more miracles. More signs. Another meal like the one he’d just multiplied out a few loaves. They wanted a Bread King. But Jesus doesn’t give them what they want. He gives them what they need. Himself.
This song walks through that entire moment — the physical hunger, the spiritual confusion, and finally the surprising invitation to eat His flesh and drink His blood. That kind of language caused many to walk away. But for those who stayed, it became the heart of their faith.
Each verse is written to contrast the thing that fades with what remains. Temporary bread with eternal life. Our striving with His gift. Our death with His promise of resurrection:
“And I will raise them up on the last day.”

A note on the music

I’m sure this one comes from my growing up on 1970s soft rock ballads. It starts with a big crescendo into the first verse, mimicking the croowds rushing to find Jesus.
The verses are in first person, so they are calm as he explains they are looking for the wrong things. Then the chorus emphasizes he is the Bread of Life with the catchiest part of the song.
All in all, it’s a drum and beat driven song that is easy to sing and tap your foot to.
